"Fragments 3" is a print of a graphite drawing that is part of an ongoing small drawing series.
 
I am a Bronx-based visual artist whose paintings and drawings explore memory, identity, and representation. Born in Santiago, Dominican Republic in 1995, I draw from personal and collective histories to examine the layered experience of identity, particularly for those negotiating diaspora, memory, and self-definition.
 
In my art, I love to explore Caribbean motifs such as the palm trees and little countryside homes that I remember from childhood and that are found in the classic Dominican landscape paintings that adorn a lot of our walls, no matter what country we live in. I moved to NYC at such a young age that my connection to Dominican identity and culture took on a form of saturated mythmaking, hence my use of small Caribbean symbols as a way to piece together some form of history and identity. Often, the immigrant experience can feel like a fragmentation of the body and mind, and through art I can play with the pieces and find meaning.
